What is the objective of the programme?
The Singapore Tourism Board expects to the number of hospitality workers to grow by 100,000 under its Tourism 2015 plan. WDA estimates that the sector needs another 2,000 chefs over the next 3 years. With the anticipated growth in the F&B industry, there is a need to build the pipeline of trained and skilled local chefs to meet this demand.
The CRAFT for Chefs programme was introduced to build the talent of trained chefs for the F&B industry through both institutional and apprenticeship training. It is designed such that trainees not only receive classroom training but also have the opportunity to train under experienced chefs from Hotels and restaurants.
Through this holistic approach, the programme aims to inculcate a passion for the culinary arts in trainees and prepare them for their career in the F&B industry.
The programme has been developed based on the F&B Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) framework. This framework is a competency based system which maps the qualifications and career progression pathways.
Upon graduation, trainees would receive the nationally recognised F&B WSQ Certificate in Food Preparation, Higher Certificate in Culinary Skills and Advanced Certificate in Culinary Skills.

How does it work?
Companies would be able to meet their demand for trained chefs and increase their competitiveness as the graduates would require a shorter period to adapt to the work environment (as they would already be used to the kitchen environment during their apprenticeship period) hence improving the productivity levels.
Furthermore, WDA will help co-fund 50% of the apprentices’ monthly stipend capped at S$400 in recognition of your chefs’ efforts in nurturing and developing them. As CRAFT for Chefs graduates are required to work in the industry for at least a year, companies can continue to have a stable workforce who is already acclimatized to kitchen culture.
